App Picker Crashing when you select Apps / Websites or "Other" Category

Hey, I have the same issue lately - unfortunately.

Could you take a look at this? Or is there already a solution for this problem, of not showing any apps when creating an app group? @kenneth

Canā€™t edit my app groups :frowning:

@kenneth

Thank you for sharing. Iā€™m sorry to see this, havenā€™t seen it before. Can you share a video of the experience?

Can you try

  1. Force close and reopen the Opal app
  2. Turn your phone on/off

Reinstalling the app fixed the issue!

Agree!! Thanks for pointing this out. Spent forever trying to find an app by looking through every category, essentially increasing my screen time while trying to limit itā€¦ A search bar is needed!

@Klair_Hans can you send a screenshot of how your app selection looks like? normally from iOS16.4 onwards there is a search bar. This screen is controlled by Apple. Please update your iPhone (how to).

When I try adding apps from the ā€œotherā€ category to a blocking session the app freezes and shuts down,

Current situation working on iOS.

Social group opens, can select which ones i want.

Canā€™t open any other folder.

I can search for W and get some apps show up that have. W in them like Word, others however donā€™t.

I canā€™t search under other letters, A, H donā€™t work, screen crashes.

I canā€™t add Productivity folder to the white list as thereā€™s too many in it.

No matter which way i try and work it there is no way to use this app to make it work for blocking all of the the distracting apps i need it too.

When will this be fixed, itā€™s been over a year now. I signed up for lifetime subscription and Iā€™m really angry at the apparent lack of care that you have for your customers about this. I want a refund.

Same issue, but for me itā€™s a lot bigger than the ā€œOtherā€ category, so I thought Iā€™d document it in case itā€™s helpful.

Drop down menus that crash: Social, Entertainment, Information & Reading, Productivity & Finance, Other. Crashes when I search for the letter: A, C, D, E, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S, T, U

Drop down menus that donā€™t crash: Games, Creativity, Education, Health & Fitness, Shopping & Food, Travel, Utilities. Letters I can search: B, F, G, J, K, P, Q, V, W, X, Y, Z.

I understand the problem is on Appleā€™s end, but do yā€™all have an explanation for why it happens? (For exampleā€”is it having too many apps in one category? Would a drop down menu start working again if I delete a few unused apps in that category?)

Unfortunately this crazy bug prevented me from ever trying Opal since it crashes as soon as I try to add more than 3 apps/sites or tap on any categories or try to use search. Surprisingly the dictation works in the search field but the app still crashes whenever I try to enter anything in the text field.

I wish it could work, but will have to uninstall. Sorry @kenneth

Feel free to reach out if youā€™d like unsolicited feedback on other parts of the app from a brand new user (love the onboarding btw).

Unfortunately this bug persists, and not just when tapping the ā€œOtherā€ category.

Iā€™m unable to tap into the search bar, and several categories crash as well. Because of this bug, I am unable to add Slack to a block. Iā€™ve tried workarounds such as expanding the Productivity section, but that crashes as well.

Happy to provide device logs and a screen recording. Am on an iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 17.5.1.

Itā€™s been a year and this is still not resolved. It was said this would be ā€œfixedā€ with iOS 16 and its currently iOS 18.1.1., so are we just to expect for this to never be fixed?

We recently (this week) had some potentially good news on this specific issue (app crashing when you select Other category), hopefully for a fix early next year.

13 pro max
iOS 17.5.1
But happening before the upgrade too. Tho I didnā€™t count how many categories werenā€™t working til after.

I know there is some issue with the iOS app picker but almost half the categories and the search function cause the screen to crash when clicking the their drop down care.

This basically make this paid app unusable since I canā€™t tell what apps Iā€™m blocking or not by not being able to see them within their categories.

Whether the issue is with a limitation of or a bug in iOS the app is still being sold as something useable and itā€™s just not.

I even deleted / reset my phone to only reinstall necessary apps Iā€™m currently using in case one of them in the ā€œentertainmentā€ category, for example, was somehow causing the app to crash. Didnā€™t work. That was a hard reset / delete of whole phone and app.

Have spent a lot of time trying to get this to work. Became todayā€™s major source or procrastination rather than decreasing procrastination. Bummer.

Copying from elsewhere:

This seems to happen when too many apps/websites are listed in a category at once.

Temporary workaround for this: Type the app or website youā€™re trying to block in a separate app, copy it, then paste it into the search bar. This means that it wonā€™t try to load a long list, thus avoiding the crash.

Itā€™s a pain, but this lets me actually configure Opal.

I am so frustratedā€”after a new update, my app picker screen is crashing constantly. certain categories still function and will open up, but selecting other categories makes the screen crash before i can pick apps within the category. in addition, trying to type even one letter into the search bar makes the screen crash, which i used to be able to get around the category crashes with. luckily iā€™m still able to select things in the social media tab, but iā€™m not able to select things in the information and reading tab, making it impossible to block reddit, which i would dearly like to be able to do. iā€™ve already reported this to opal but none of the troubleshooting theyā€™ve suggested has worked. anyone else having this problem, especially following the most recent update? i have an iphone 12 mini and am worried that itā€™s too old of an iphone to work well with the new update, even though itā€™s not an old phone at all

Hey @Peds,

Weā€™re very sorry about the trouble: weā€™ve escalated this issue to Apple multiple times, but unfortunately thereā€™s no response yet. That said, weā€™ve updated our help doc for tips on how to troubleshoot this issue, and instructions on how you yourself can report to Apple, if youā€™re inclined:

Sorry about that again,
Team Opal

Theyā€™re never going to fix it, itā€™s been like this for years and itā€™s only getting worse

Iā€™ve had this problem for a while, but unfortunately, it has worsened. Whenever I try to edit my block list, it glitches out except for two categories. Iā€™ve considered putting a monitoring limit on all of my apps as a sacrifice (there are still essential apps I need to access regardless of screen time). Still, because apps & websites are never removed from the list, I pass the 49 restriction limit. This has been a problem for a very long time. It was manageable. Now, it has gotten worse and made my use of the app mostly useless, honestly. Iā€™ve emailed support multiple times and have gotten no response, which I find funny because I got a pop-up when I opened the app this morning asking if Iā€™d like to get the subscription. The constant reasoning (excuse) is that it is out of their hands because of Apple- Iā€™m going to be honest, at this point, itā€™s a slight cop-out. This app has existed for years, and if you cannot fix a bug for one of the main features to the point it is getting worse, you must take some responsibility. Iā€™m considering deleting this app.

TLDR: The editing block list has major glitches, which have drastically decreased the appā€™s capabilities and functions.
