Mac App browser support - Firefox, Dia, Atlas, Orion, Perplexity, Ecosia, Zen

Hi there!

I am a big fan of opal, I have been using it on my mac book for a better part of a year now, but recently switched browsers from chrome to firefox.

When I was using chrome Opal blocked sites perfectly but after switching it no longer seems to be working.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?

Hey @Lucas_Eltoft ,

Happy to help. Currently, our Mac app supports Chrome, Safari, Arc, Opera, Edge, and Brave. That said, I’ve passed your suggestion to support Firefox along to our Mac App engineer to consider as we continue to improve the app. Given that the Mac App is currently relatively new, it’s possible we’ll integrate Firefox in the future. Stay tuned on that front!

All the best,
Team Opal

Please, please, please consider adding Opal support on Zen, Firefox and Dia! I would love to finally make the transition to Zen, but this might be a huge setback for now.

Dia support please! I don’t want to switch browsers just for Opal…

+1 for Dia support, a lot of users switched from Arc & Chrome, it’s the only thing blocking me from an ideal Opal setup.

Please add Dia support! Hoping I don’t need to search for another solution.

Hi! I would love to use Opal Mac on OpenAI’s browser ChatGPT Atlas. It’s based on Chromium but unfortunately it isn’t working to block at the moment.

Thanks!

That’s a fair question, and I can see why supporting Opal inside ChatGPT Atlas on macOS would be useful for staying focused while working in a browser built around AI. Since Atlas is still fairly new, it feels like extension and integration support is somewhat limited, which may be why Opal does not function as expected yet. As Atlas matures, native support or compatibility for productivity tools like this could add a lot of value for users. Have you noticed whether this issue is specific to Atlas, or does Opal behave differently for you in other Chromium-based browsers on macOS?

This is specific to Atlas.

It works for me on Chrome/Safari.

Atlas is in theory built on Chromium and compatible with extensions – but Opal doesn’t use extensions anymore. There could be a technical blocker but I’d assume it’s just Opal isn’t asking for permissions to control ChatGPT Atlas (e.g. Automation permission) like it does for Chrome/Safari.

Thanks!

Hey, I’d like the Opal app to work with OpenAI’s ChatGPT Atlas browser, the Chromium‑based one. It doesn’t currently block distractions. Could you add support for it? Thanks!

Perplexity’s Comet browser isn’t supported. It’s chromium-based, and RescueTime already supports it, so it should be pretty straightforward to implement.

It’s about Opal support in Comet. Blocks don’t block in Opal at the moment.

It’s an interesting point you brought up, and I can see why support for the Perplexity Comet browser would be useful. Since Comet runs on a Chromium-based engine, most features should work smoothly, though occasional compatibility gaps can still appear—something I’ve noticed with a few other tools like mesolyft as well. It might just need some optimization from the developers’ side to ensure better stability within Opal. Sharing the specific issues you’re facing could help the team determine whether it’s a bug or a missing integration.

Opal blocks Safari/Chrome fine on Mac, but cannot block Comet (Perplexity’s AI browser) since it doesn’t appear in Automation and isn’t supported.

Please add Comet support for blocking during focus sessions, like other Chromium browsers

Hey there @srujan ,

Thanks for reaching out. I’ve merged your request into the existing thread on the topic. I’ve also passed this suggestion and this thread along to our engineers to consider as we continue to upgrade the Mac app. Stay tuned on that front!

I use the Ecosia browser instead of Google and I want to be able to block websites on there so I can focus on schoolwork. Thanks!

Hey there @Thea,

Happy to help. How you can block a website depends on what browser you are using on your phone. First up, to clarify, I’m afraid that it’s not always possible to block websites via third-party browsers (including Chrome, Firefox, Ecosia, etc), but you should be able to block websites on iPhone’s native Safari web app:

If you want to block via a third-party browser, we’d recommend setting up that block using your Allow List. That way, only the apps and sites you select will be available, and everything else will be blocked:

If you instead mean that you are unable to find a specific website in your ā€œChoose Activities" screen, I’m afraid that screen is generated by Apple, and unfortunately, we’re unable to amend anything that appears there on your behalf. That said, we have some workarounds that you can try here:

I hope that helps,
Team Opal

Hi!
I would love support for the Ecosia browser if that’s possible. It’s a cool browser and I would love to use opal with it.

I’d like to request support for the new browser Dia on desktop. Currently my blocks take effect in all browsers officially supported by Opal, but Dia is not affected. Dia is my new daily driver browser, so it would be very helpful to have my blocks working there as well. Thank you!
