We launched a website! https://screentime.opal.so/
Who uses their phone the most? This dataset includes Opal users in 57 countries and 138 cities.
For example, New Yorkers spend 40min more on their phone daily than Parisians.
AFAIK this is the most comprehensive database available globally today for data on country and city level phone screen time - based on an extensive sample size of Opal users on iPhone (for example 300,000 in the USA).
What makes this data valuable is that it is observed, not declared (like all data cited in media up to now). One 2023 study found that when you ask people to declare their screen time, they underestimate it by about 40%. This means that most journalists who have written about screen time in the past cited data that is very inaccurate.
If you’re part of this community and you’re a journalist, researcher, or student interested in learning more, please reach out. We made this website for you to make sure that general knowledge on screen time spreads so that we can effectively create solutions to help the 5 billion humans that use smartphones focus better every day.
